Norman Two-Family

Complete 2024

Norman Two-Family represents the evolution of a narrow, timeworn Brooklyn property into a functional, family-centered residence. While we gutted, restored, and modernized the late-1800s wood-framed house – protecting select original features – the renovation’s most dramatic improvements come from maximizing space through a substantial addition and custom built-in storage.

For the 16”-wide home, storage solutions were key. Downstairs, custom millwork introduces entryway closets, a bookshelf and entertainment center, and a significant cabinet system in the renovated kitchen. The upper level houses three bedrooms, each with built-ins compensating for the tight floor plans. The children’s rooms feature mirrored designs of custom beds, closets and desk-shelf systems, painted in colors distinct to each child. The primary bedroom millwork creates storage at the entryway and foot of the bed, maximizing every possible space.

An addition on the lower floors enabled the kitchen to be resituated, creating a dining area and opening views onto the back garden. In addition to upgraded plumbing, lighting, and a new second bathroom with a skylight, the renovation also revitalizes a garden-level apartment, carrying it from a crumbling state into a modern one-bedroom suite for guests and grandparents.

The façade was reclad from dated yellow vinyl to a more reserved blue Hardie Board. Its framing was opened and, using tax-lot photos, restored to mimic its 1800s bay windows, celebrating the home’s original splendor. Throughout the extensive renovation, this and other tactful upgrades invigorate the property’s inherent charm.
